What is a Hostname?

FAQ

A hostname is the name given to a computer or device on a network, whether a private network or the internet. On a private network, the device will usually have an easily identifiable name, such as ‘Mike’s iPhone’ or ‘Maria’s PC’. On the internet, the hostname is the first part of a fully qualified domain name (FQDN), indicating the network that hosts the site. For most sites, this will be ‘www’ – as the world wide web, or internet, is host.
